The plant philosophy

Plants, treated gently

Sen Chay turns tofu, mushrooms and lotus into delicate meat-free versions of the classics, in a serene room near a Hue pagoda.

Fresh, light, wholesome. Plant-based, all of it.

  • Tofu

Pressed by hand each morning, soft as cloud.

  • Mushroom

Woodland depth where meat once stood.

  • Lotus

Seed, stem and petal, nothing wasted.

Three quiet heroes

Slide sideways - the heroes drift past

A colorful vegetable bowl with fresh greens

Tofu

Our tofu is set at dawn and never fried hard - it keeps the softness of the soy milk it came from.

A composed salad plate, neatly arranged

Mushroom

Shiitake and oyster mushrooms bring the deep, savoury weight that lets the classics stay classic.

A fresh noodle bowl scattered with herbs

Lotus

The pond gives us everything: seeds for rice and sweet soup, stems for crunch, petals for the table.

Slow food, a gentle room. Come a little early, breathe, stay for tea.

Reviews

  • Took my mother, who has opinions about this sort of cooking. The Fresh Lotus Rolls is what I was still thinking about on the way home. The bill was fair and nobody tried to sell us anything.

  • Turned up at nine on a Saturday on the off chance and got seated in ten minutes. Ordered the Mushroom Clay Pot on the waiter's advice and he was completely right. If I still lived in Hue I would be there weekly.

  • Neighbours had talked about it for a year. They were not exaggerating. The Lotus Seed Rice arrived looking simple and did not taste it. A small menu, done properly, which is the right way round.
